Medical Examiner and Forensic Center
The Center is home to the County’s Medical Examiner, Veterinary Medicine, and Environmental Health laboratories. This LEED Silver certified building is among the most technically sophisticated facilities of its kind in the United States and is NAME and ISO17025 accredited.
Medical Examiner areas include five separate autopsy suites: a two-station anthropology, dental and embalming suite; a single-station decomposition suite with separate cold room; a single-station homicide suite; a two-station teaching and research autopsy suite with viewing balcony; and the main autopsy suite containing 11 separate stations with technology to better manage cases and space for future expansion. Other areas include X-ray; tissue/organ harvest with separate cold room; DNA, histology, and toxicology labs; large instrumentation lab; and large, space-efficient refrigerated morgue for bodies and specimens.
Veterinary Medicine and Environmental Health features agricultural analysis and domestic and wildlife necropsy rooms, safety equipment, and disposal methods; specialized labs such as BSL3 virology and BSL3 necropsy, entomology, insectary, parasitology, microbiology, plant pathology, growth chamber, veterinary serology, histology and toxicology, DNA lab for identification of zoonotic and emerging diseases vital to public health; and lab support such as holding areas, refrigeration and storage, all meeting highest standards of containment and sterile environment and designed to accommodate clean and dirty protocols.
