Illinois State Police

Metro-East Forensic Laboratory

The Illinois State Police identified a new building site to relocate a new, expanded state-of-the-art crime lab that houses approximately 50 staff and the following key functional units: drug chemistry, firearms (including firing/testing range), latent prints, polygraph, trace, forensic biology/DNA, and crime scene services including vehicle exam bays.

The facility also incorporates management, staff, and clerical offices, as well as support functions—evidence receiving, handling, cataloging and storage; instrument rooms; firearms storage; scope room; and shared spaces. The design also features on-site and in-building security systems including closed circuit TV and card key systems.

This facility is planned and designed to meet current law enforcement forensic design criteria including CODIS, NIBIN, and compliance with ASCLD/LAB International standards. This new laboratory serves eight Illinois counties totaling 154 law enforcement agencies. The ISP has the second largest network of criminal forensic labs in the country, next to the FBI.
