Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Complex

This expansion and renovation creates a state-of-the-art multidisciplinary research and development facility housing various hands-on learning and undergraduate research programs within the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. For example, the Product Innovation and Creativity Center supports team-based learning, experimentation, and problem-solving. Teams are able to take real life engineering problems from brainstorming and concept phase all the way through prototype and development to multimedia presentations to faculty and industry groups.

The project develops new labs and upgrades existing instructional labs and computer facilities to incorporate new techniques and technologies into the learning process.

Featured laboratories include: multiple flexible integrated manufacturing labs, materials testing labs, high-bay machine shop, hybrid manufacturing, virtual reality, metrology, energy research, friction and impact testing, small and large engine testing, supersonic wind tunnel, robotics, flight simulation, laser deposition, convection, combustion and fuels, and welding.

The complex also includes a design studio, work cells in the prototype loft, rapid prototyping lab, student machine shop, commons areas for team activities, presentation hub, tele/video-conferencing room, and a display area for inspirational engineering models. Student teams walk in with problem definitions, engage in brainstorming and conceptualization exercises, synthesize solutions and optimize them, prototype these solutions, validate them through testing, and prepare to present them to their sponsors and instructors, with guidance from experienced personnel and industry mentors as well as peers.
